Additional Info

NATURE AND THE COUNTRYSIDE

The property is a very natural site which is a true haven for wildlife. Numerous mammals and birds seldom, if ever, seen in Britain can be regularly seen and photographed around the lake and surround areas. These include Hoopoe, different species of deer, red squirrels, pine martens, red and black kites, hen harriers, ospreys and the occasional eagle. We are delighted to have resident golden orioles and pied flycatchers in the summer months. Beautifully coloured lizards and salamanders are also common around the lake.

If you’re into trees, the site has dozens of different species, including native hardwoods & deciduous trees, firs, conifers and spruce, along with some imports. Included are black poplar, walnut, American oak, lime, white willows, copper birch, copper hazel, magnolias, eucalyptus, contorted willow, tulip tree, Mexican bean, dogwoods, paper handkerchief tree and Chilean lantern trees.

PLACES OF INTEREST

Places of interest nearby include; the tragic village of Oradour sur Glane, destroyed by retreating Germans in 1944 with the loss of 630 villagers lives. As a memorial the village has been left exactly as it was after the massacre making this an absolute must see.

A large outdoor leisure centre is also close by, as is Futurescope. Both ideal for any youngsters in your group.
The stunning river Vienne is just a few miles away and a large barrage, about 2 miles long, is just up the road to the north.

The beautiful town of Confolens is a 10 minute drive from the fishery and has just about every type of shop you could want. It also has some interesting old architecture in the form of buildings and bridges over the river Vienne which runs through the centre of the town.

BED & BREAKFASTS

If you are arriving a day or two early there are plenty of bed and breakfasts available nearby. We highly recommend www.maisonhirondelles.com and its just a few minutes away from us in Mezieres-sur-Issoire.

Should you wish to choose another location, a good website to visit is www.chambres-hotes.fr this is a fantastic site and can be viewed in English, it has many listings from the surrounding area and Hotels/B&B’s throughout France. Another brilliant site to visit with some great listings of B&B’s is www.bedandbreakfast.eu

TRAVEL INSURANCE

You (and ALL members of your group) are strongly advised to take out personal travel insurance, AS SOON AS THE HOLIDAY IS BOOKED. It is cheap and most policies not only cover loss or damage to your property but also cancellation costs. This is most important as once your booking is accepted you are legally responsible to honour it.

All individuals travelling abroad should also get an EHIC (European Health Insurance Card), which is free when applied for online via www.ehic.org.uk, other websites may charge. The EHIC allows you to get state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free.
